Dr. Joseph W. Crowley passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 3 surrounded by friends and Staff members at Arden Courts of Farmington.
Joe was born in New Britain, CT on July 11, 1925 the oldest of 3 children to the late Joseph and Grace (Smith) Crowley. He attended local schools and graduated from New Britain High School. Joe served in the European theater during WWII as a turret gunner. After completing his Military Service, Joe attended Notre Dame University, graduating in 1950. He completed his medical degree from the Catholic University of Louvain in 1954. Joe did his internship and residency at St. Vincent's Hospital Center in New York and Kings County Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He practiced as an Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist in New Britain and Bristol and was an attending physician at St. Francis Hospital, New Britain General Hospital, and Bristol Hospital.
Joe was a member of the New Britain YMCA where he served on the Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Hillstead Museum and of the Farmington Country Club. After his retirement, Joe traveled extensively and spent his summers at his vacation home on the island of Vinal Haven in Maine with friends and family. He took great pleasure raising his beloved dogs.
Joe was predeceased by his brother, William and his nephew, Stephen Downes. He leaves behind his sister, Ann Crowley Downes of New Britain and his sister-in-law Grace Crowley of Hebron, CT. Joe also leaves behind nieces Karen Downes Mankowski of California and Katherine Crowley of Massachusetts, nephews Robert Downes of California, Michael Downes of West Hartford, CT, William Downes of Southington, CT, Brian and Jeffrey Downes of New Britain, CT and William Crowley of Massachusetts as well as his many grand-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 9:00 AM at the Farrell Funeral Home, 110 Franklin Sq. New Britain with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick's Church, 110 Main St. Farmington. Burial will be held privately in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd.
