James R. Murphy of New Britain died Sunday (April 20, 2014) at home.
Born in New Britain and a lifelong resident, he was the son of the late James A. Murphy Jr. and late Lillian (Legat) Murphy.
Mr. Murphy was an attorney at Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford for 41 years. He was Vice President of the Products Unit Claims Services of Travelers Insurance from 2001 until his death. He was also the president and owner of Genphil, Inc. located in New Britain. Mr. Murphy was a member of the Connecticut and American Bar Association. He received his BA degree from St. Vincent's College and a JD degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law of Cleveland State University. As a Vietnam War Marine veteran, Jim served as a Corporal E-4. Jim was actively involved with the Hospital for Special Care and St. Joseph's Church, where he served on the parish council and the finance board of the church. He was a world traveler, golfer and lover of all animals.
Mr. Murphy is survived by his loving children, Kathleen A. Murphy, a teacher in the Consolidated School District of New Britain and Brian E. Murphy, employed at PPC in West Hartford. He also leaves behind his beloved life partner, Louise Murphy of New Britain. Mr. Murphy leaves behind cousins, colleagues and many dear friends that will miss his humor, antics and wisdom. He was predeceased by his son Cpl. James R. Murphy on April 22, 1999.
The funeral mass will be held Saturday April 26, 2014 at 9 am at St. Joseph's Church in New Britain, 195 South Main Street. Burial with full military honors will immediately follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, 1141 Stanley Street, New Britain. Visitation will be Friday April 25, 2014 from 2pm to 7pm at Farrell Funeral Home, 110 Franklin Square. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cpl. James R. Murphy Scholarship Fund; care of Friends of Football at New Britain High School.
