Louise, Kathleen and Brian I have had a hard time finding the words to say to you. Jim was always there for me and my family when I needed them especially when both my parents died.James and Lillian made their home our home when my mother died 27 years ago and Jim opened his home and heart to me and my sisters when our dad died last August. The pain, lost and tears that all of you are going though I've been there and it's hard. You lost a husband, father and a best friend. I couldn't be there because of other circumstances here at my home. He was a very special to me when we when growing up together and he was my very special cousin. I want you to know that he was in my heart and prayers along with the three of you that day. Please know that my entire family (clinton) will be thinking and praying for you at this time of sorrow.

As a colleague of Jim at Travelers, I admired his profesional work and even more so Jim's collegial, sharing and friendly ways. Jim always had a good word and a smile to share, even when you just passed him in the hall. He was generous and kind and he epitomized the Marine way - a gentleman and semper fi to the end. His many friends here will miss Jim. Jim Villa Old Lyme

Goodbye, Jim. It was always an entertaining and educational treat to talk with you; it's hard to believe none of us will be able to do that again. In our business, it often seems harder than it should be to encounter a colleague who is uncompromisingly honest, straightforward and devoid of guile; to me, you were always that guy in Travelers Claim. No one had more respect and concern for his staff than you did; the golden rule of leadership. I'll miss you.

As a fellow Travelers employee, I had the privledge of knowing Jim for several years. He was truly one of my favorite acquaintences. His quick wit was always good for a laugh but, more importantly, he was a great person. I will miss him greatly. I wish to extend my condolances to his family, friends and colleagues.

More than 30 years ago, I started my practice as a lawyer and I was introduced to Jim through my father, Bill Norton, who was the Claims Manager for Travelers Insurance here in Canada. My father had known Jim for years and simply loved him. I dare say that in the insurance world he was so irascible...a free spirit. He was loyal, forthright and at times downright funny, yet obviously dealing with the effects of things that happened in his life including the loss of his son.I know it may seem crazy to some and I thought about not mentioning it here but, as Jim knew, my father named his favorite German Shepherd "Murphy" in recognition of similar lovely attributes.I feel a personal loss and share in the sadness.

It was my pleasure to work with Jim at Travelers for several years until my retirement in 1990. He was highly competent as an attorney handling large value cases primarily on behalf of Fortune 500 policyholders of Travelers. He was a skillful investigator, evaluator and negotiator of the the most difficult cases. He was held in high regard by Travelers customers, management and associates, and by his opponents for his ethics, competence, and professionalism in carrying out his work. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a zest for life that enhanced his relationships with all those who knew him. He was a rare individual who was a privilege to know. He will be deeply missed by his legion of friends as well as his loving family.

I met Jim just two weeks after his son died and thought how terrible a thing this was to happen to such a fine father and such a promising young soldier. One year later, I lost my 21 year old son, also a namesake, and, over the years, thought about Jim and his son and the fact that he continued to live on in a way that honored the memory of young Jim. Consciously or not, I think Jim served as a role model for me and many other unfortunate parents and I always felt a close bond with him because of our shared experience. I only hope I have lived as exemplary a life as Jim has since suffering such a great loss. My faith tells me that Jim has now been reunited with his son and we are left here on earth to miss him and hope for the day when we can see them both again. God bless the Murphy family. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

I worked with Jim as one of his "insureds" but anyone working with Jim became part of Jim's life. Jim was a man of integrity but also quite a character who loved his job, his family and his country. I always looked forward to seeing Jim and his co-horts and send my condolences to his family and co-workers. He will be missed by many but especially by his family and those who worked with him, especially his sense of humor and dedication. I had the honor of attending Jim's son's funeral in 1999 and remember a loving family mourning the unexpected loss of their son, brother and grandson but I especially remember the love Jim expressed for his son and how proud he was of him and his whole family. I pray that God grants peace to each of you as your mourn Jim! Rest in peace, Jim.

It is hard to hear that Jim's ready smile, sharp wit, extraordinarily keen mind and generous life are already gone. Working with Jim was always a joyful experience, even though the cases were often very difficult. He was a gentlemen, a soldier, a friend to me through thick and thin, and a pillar of his community. We miss him terribly. Jim, I'll be looking for you when I get there! Rest easy, friend. You deserve your rest. Thanks for all that you did for me and for so many others. Love, David

It seems like just yesterday we were there to bury dad. It was a comfort knowing that you visited their graves often and that you were there for us as well. What a great loss this world is experiencing today. To your children--Your loss is the greatest and know that you will remain in our thoughts and prayers. The Clinton girls know only too well the emptiness and loss one feels at this time. Losing a parent is a difficult and life changing event. You will hear his voice when you least expect it and wonder why. Know that he will never be far and will always watch over you. He has the best seat in the house. Your father was an amazing man and for this you should be proud. May God bless you with comfort and strength to endure this time of sorrow.
