Obituary of John Melley

A wonderful, gentle soul passed away Monday, April 14th, 2014, John F. Melley, husband of Diane Alverio Melley, and adoring father of Jessica E. Melley and Rebecca M. Melley lost his battle with cancer after a long journey. All who were fortunate to know John, knew his quick wit, his kindness and his love of family and life. In recent years, he was finally able to play the golf he loved so much, and enjoy watching his daughters flourish and become strong young women. John retired from the State of Connecticut, Dept. of Children and Families in 2008. In his earlier years he played football at New Britain High School and St. Thomas More School and was an avid swimmer.
The son of John F. Melley and Mary Glynn Melley, he also leaves an extended family: his sister Margaret and her husband Howard Asal of Kensington, his brother Daniel F. Melley of New Britain; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Dolores McNamara of Southington, Kathryn McNamara of Bristol, John Podbielski of New Britain, Joann McNamara of New Britain, Michael Donnelly, Sr., of New Britain, Yvonne Alverio and her husband Michael Jones of Florida; Marilyn Alverio of Glastonbury, Geraldo Alverio of Florida; and his father-in-law Gerardo Alverio of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters James McNamara, William McNamara, Donald McNamara, Maryann Podbielski, Richard McNamara and Patricia Donnelly.
Funeral services will be held Thursday 10:00 AM from the Farrell Funeral Home 110 Franklin Sq. New Britain, and at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph's Church 195 So. Main St. New Britain. Burial will be private. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John F. Melley's name to Friends of New Britain High Football c/o New Britain High School 110 Mill St. New Britain, CT 06051.
