Dear Diane, my mother Maureen informed me of the sad passing of John and I just wanted to send my deepest condolences at this sad time. I was only a very young kid when we visited you all many moons ago and John, as well as all of our extended family, showed us an amazing time that we still talk about to this day. He is remembered across the miles and throughout the world...

My heart goes out to you at this sad, sad time. John was a wonderful man. He had a glow about him and, even when he was sick, that twinkle would light up his eyes. I feel blessed to have known him and send my heartfelt sympathy on your great loss.

There are not many people in your life you can truly call a hero. Uncle John was one of mine, our “cool uncle”. The Donnelly boys and Pod girls were VIPs at Washington Pool when he was lifeguarding. My sisters and I were victims of his teasing tag team with Dwight down on Brook Street but we loved the attention. He was the only one to call me “Lizzie” in front of my mother and get away with it. He was the first to treat his nieces and nephews as adults. He was our teacher, philosopher, health guru, dance instructor and friend. I will forever remember his impish smile, his Irish sweater, his perfecting Grandma’s turkey stuffing and how long it took for him to read the cards during our endless Trivial Pursuit weekends. I will cherish the special bond he had with my mother. I adored him and will miss him dearly.

Diane, Jess and Becca, I am holding you in my heart and sending all my love. John was always so kind to me and to our entire family, he never failed to make Bob laugh and was one of Casey's biggest supporters. Oh how Casey loved Mr Melley! She was especially skilled at spotting the good guys and he was one of them for all of us. I believe his spirit and energy will be with you forever and that ripples created by his presence here on earth will continue to spread out, touching so many with his kindness and love. We are here for you always. Love, Rosemary

Diane, Jess, Rebecca, and all who loved Uncle John~ He had such a loving and peaceful soul. Always learning, always genuinely interested in what others had to share. Wickedly funny but sensitive and kind. His tenacity and resolve during these difficult years was incredible. In everything he did, he calmly found his own path with confident strength, no matter what others thought. We just adored him and are heartbroken for his family.
