Richard Ahern ,69 of New Britain passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning (March 18, 2014) with his family by his side. He leaves behind his wife of 31 years Mary Ann(Varano)Ahern , his devoted daughter Maureen Jordan and her husband Jorge , sons Steven Ahern and girlfriend Sarajane Hoff , Christopher Ahern and girlfriend Jasmine Gonzalez, daughters Wendy Ahern and boyfriend Kevin Blackmar, Kristen Johnson and husband Brian, Kathleen and husband Russell Judd , son Michael Ahern and his wife Debbie . He has 10 grandchildren whom he loved dearly Mackenzie, Michaela, Natallea, Julia, Emma, Lauren, Kevin, David, Michael and Sean. He leaves behind his brother Donald Ahern and wife Marcia. His uncle Buzz Keough, Aunts Dorothy Palys and Alice Ahern ,He also leaves behind his in laws Clara Varano, Patricia & Paul Matulis, Maggie and Jim Collin, Kenneth Varano , David & Pat Varano and Stephen & Erica Varano. Several nieces and nephews who he adored. Also several "adopted" children and Grandchildren who he treated like his own and made him so happy. He was predecease by his Grandmother "Lolly" Keough, parents Lambert and Jane Ahern, brother James Ahern, sister in law Dedra Ahern ,Nephew Bryan Ahern and father in law Salvatore Varano.
While Richards stay at Riverside he made so many friends one being his roommate David Baker. David and he were partners in crime. He met a family that took him in as their own. Missy and her family spent countless hours with Richard. Missy had MS and Richard helped to take care of her. Richard became an advocate for all patients there that couldn't advocate for themselves. He stood up strong for all Riverside patients. Richard was a founding member of the New Britain Earls. He could talk and tell stories for days . He shared a joy of trains ,beanie babies and kid movies such as all the Toy Story movies with his kids and Grandkids. One of his favorite things to do is bring his grandson Mack to the New Britain Stanley store where he made lots of friends . Anyone you ask will say no matter what was happening to Richard and all the health issues he battled he always had a positive attitude. You could always see his big smile and huge bright blue eyes glowing. Please come dressed in comfortable clothing and jeans as requested by Richard.
A visitation will be held Friday from 2:00 to 5:00 PM with a service at 4:00 PM at the Farrell Funeral Home 110 Franklin Sq. New Britain. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society - National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter
