Howard A. Norton of Old Saybrook, CT (formerly of Ossining, NY) passed away at home at 90 years of age on January 11, 2011. Howard was born to Irish immigrants Frances and Patrick Norton on March 17, 1920 in New York City. Howard is survived by his wife Genevieve and children Howard (Colette) Norton, Kathy (Dennis) Kooney, Kenneth Norton, James (Phyllis) Norton, and Virginia Norton. He is also survived by grandchildren Paul (Jennifer) Kooney, Nicole Kooney, Bryan (Shana), Michael, Andrew and Timothy Norton and great-grandchildren Colin and Jack Kooney. He was predeceased by his three sisters, Helen McKiernan, Alice Volker and Frances Woerther.
Howard served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. After the war, he joined the New York City Police Department becoming a Lt. Detective and retiring after almost 30 years of service. Howard attended John Jay College and PACE University. He was an avid reader and even after moving to Connecticut, he continued to read the Daily News, and the Post every day. The Hartford Courant was also a favorite. He loved to do crossword puzzles and would often do them jointly with his wife. He also enjoyed going to the YMCA to swim and exercise. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all.
Friends and family are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Paul's Church, Kensington, CT, Monday at 11:30 A.M. Burial will be private. Visitation will be Sunday at the Farrell Funeral Home 110 Franklin Sq. New Britain, CT. from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M.
