Obituary of Jessie Nuss

Please share a memory of Jessie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
OBITUARIES The gentle and loving spirit of Jessie Viola (Locke) Nuss, passed into eternal rest at her home on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010. Born in North Rutland, MA, on September 21, 1916 to William and Mary (Murdock) Locke, Jessie spent her early years in Rutland and then Lancaster, MA. She came to New Britain in 1938 to pursue her career as a librarian at the New Britain Public Library. It was here that she met and fell in love with the man that would be her husband for 68 years, George P. Nuss, who sadly predeceased her on Oct. 30, 2009. Her career as a librarian was interrupted for a few years when she took time to follow George to Bremerton, WA, at the beginning of his military service during WWII. She returned to CT and began raising their first child. Upon George's return from the Philippines they resumed their married life and welcomed three additional children into their family. Jessie returned to the library in 1958 and continued to work there until her retirement in 1981. Jessie relaxed by reading books, collecting miniature shoes, gardening, doing needlework of all kinds, feeding and watching the birds and cheering on the UCONN Huskies' teams and NY Yankees. She also loved all kinds of music and played the piano and organ. She looked forward to and greatly enjoyed her weekly organ lessons, the last of which was in July of this year. She was also a member of the Stanley Memorial Church. Jessie was first and foremost a warm, loving and wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and mother-in-law. Nothing brought her greater pleasure than to cook for her family and to engage in seemingly endless conversations about the events occurring in their lives. Jessie leaves behind to share many warm memories her four children and their families Peter and Bonnie Nuss of Hyde Parke, NY, David and Susan Nuss of Tunkhannock, PA, Carolyn and Robert Vickery of Phoenix, NY and Gretchen and Frank Tomaro of Wethersfield; seven grandchildren, Michelle (Vickery) and Evan King of Clay, NY, Laura (Vickery) and Keith Stegmaier of Clay, NY, Sandra (Nuss) and Ryan Zellner of Tunkhannock, PA, Scott Nuss of Vernon, CT, Jared Nuss of Williamsburg, VA, Daniel and Amy Tomaro, of Hamden, CT, and Steven Tomaro of Wethersfield, and three great grandchildren Tyler and Abigail Zellner, Lyra Stegmaier; two brothers Elwin Locke and his wife Corine and Chester Locke and his wife Connie of Lancaster, MA; many special nieces and nephews and very dear friends Curt and Carol Schultz in Bremerton, WA. In addition to her husband, Jessie was predeceased by her brother Wilburt Locke, also of Lancaster, MA. A special thanks to Jessie's caring neighbors who always took time to stop and visit, to Jim S. for all the years of organ lessons and friendship, to Mary O. for all her loving care over the years and to the visiting nurses of Interim Healthcare and Hospice VNA of Central CT for all their care and support in recent months. Funeral services will be held Tuesday 12:00 noon at the Farrell Funeral Home 110 Franklin Square New Britain, CT. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, New Britain. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of New Britain Public Library 20 High Street New Britain, CT 06051.
