ALBERT J. SWANSON, 96, of Old Lyme, passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at his home.
He was born on April 1, 1919, in New Britain, the son of Albert and Mary "Josephine" (Lynch) Swanson. On September 10, 1955, Al married Florence Moore and together they enjoyed almost fifty-five years of marriage. Florence passed away on June 24, 2010.
Al graduated from New Britain High School and later served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. A proud crew member on the destroyer, the USS Thompson, Al sailed around the world and later enjoyed telling the story of traveling through the Panama Canal on the Thompson. Forty years after the war ended, the crew of the USS Thompson began organizing annual reunions with Al and Florence frequently in attendance.
After the war ended, Al began his career with the Hartford Electric Company and it was his employment at Millstone Nuclear Power Plant that brought Florence and Al to Old Lyme over forty-five years ago. Al attended the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Nuclear Power Plant Operator Training Program and the Rutgers University Supervisory Development Program and he retired as an Operations Shift Manager for Unit #1 at Millstone.
Al is survived by many cousins, great-nieces and nephews, wonderful caretakers and neighbors.
