Obituary of Maureen Hollfelder
Please share a memory of Maureen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Maureen (Fagan) Hollfelder, 79, of Newington, beloved wife of the late Richard J. Hollfelder, died on Tuesday, June 12, at home surrounded by her loving family following a brief illness. She was born in New Britain, daughter of the late Edward J. Fagan and Margaret (Fitzsimmons) Hauck. She graduated from New Britain High School where she was voted the first ever Valentine Sweetheart in her senior year. After graduating from Lasell Junior College, she worked as a medical secretary at Connecticut Mutual Insurance Company.
Maureen and Richard had a storybook romance after they met in sixth grade at the old Stanley School in the Belvidere section of New Britain. Their love grew stronger over the years and they were happily married in 1957 following Richard's graduation from the University of Connecticut and his completion of military service in Korea. They lived briefly in Hartford and moved to Newington in 1961, where they joyfully raised their family. After their children were grown, Maureen took a job in the office of St. Thomas Aquinas High School where, for a generation of students, she was often the person the students came to for advice when they had a problem. In her later years, she enjoyed volunteering with her lifelong friend, Marylou Gaffney, in the gift shop at The Hospital for Special Care. She was a long-time daily communicant at the Church of the Holy Spirit and a member of its Ladies' Guild. She enjoyed playing golf as a member at Indian Hill Country Club for many years, and was an avid fan of many sports, in particular UCONN Men's and Women's Basketball.
Maureen was a kind, caring and compassionate person, always with a smile, and she enjoyed many friendships, some dating back to childhood. She always remembered her friend's and family's birthdays or anniversaries with a lovely card. Maureen was never late, and never early, but always on time. Family and friends often teased her that they could set their clocks by her arrival. She will be sadly missed by all.
She is survived by her daughter Ellen A. Roback and her husband Frank of Newington; her daughter Beth A. Hollfelder of Newington, and Michael Ayles of Guilford; her son Richard J. Hollfelder, Jr., his wife Kim, grandchildren Allyse and Reese Hollfelder, and step-granddaughter, Amara Shields of Newington; her brother Atty. Lawrence J. Fagan and his wife Mary Ann of Kensington; her sister Margaret F. Ficks of Kensington; her stepbrother Robert L. Hauck and his wife Janet of Sugar Land, TX; her brother-in-law Jack Hollfelder of New Smyrna Beach, FL; her sister-in-law Marie Hollfelder of Old Lyme; her nephews and nieces and their spouses, John A. Fagan and his wife Melissa; Atty. Christopher J. Fagan and his wife Dr. Patricia Fagan; Laura A. Ficks; Atty. Carl R. Ficks, Jr. and his wife Carol; Paul J. Ficks and his wife Andrea; Grant Wood and his wife Lori; Kathleen Silva; Michael Wood; Peter Hauck and his wife Mary; and Julie Kastor and her husband David. Besides her husband Richard, she was predeceased by her sister, Therese F. Wood; her brother-in-law, C. Richard Ficks; her brother-in-law, Fred M. Hollfelder, and her grandson Joseph Roback. She also leaves many special friends and neighbors, especially Mike and Joanne Marino.
