Obituary of Donald J. Griggs
Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dr. Donald J. Griggs, of Kensington, passed away on July 9, 2015 at the Hospital of Central CT. Born in New Britain, he lived all his life in New Britain and Kensington. A graduate of New Britain High School, he then attended the University of Massachusetts, graduating from the School of Optometry.
He was a Nursing Home Administrator at several facilities throughout the state and also practiced Optometry for many years. In 1967, he founded the Walnut Hill Care Center in New Britain and along with his late sister, Helen Karlonas, they served the greater New Britain community with their dedication to the health care profession. Donald served his country during the Korean Conflict as an optometrist within a MASH unit. He often noted that the M*A*S*H television show was an accurate portrayal of his experience in Korea.
During his free time, he enjoyed their home in Old Saybrook, boating and fishing and had his own lobster pots. He golfed at the Shuttle Meadow Country Club, played racquet ball, and was a member of the Sailing Masters of 1812 Fife and Drum Corps of Essex. He possessed a unique sense of humor and always enjoyed a good practical joke. He will be remembered for his joy for life and his care and concern for family, friends and coworkers. Donald will remain with us in our hearts.
Dr. Griggs is survived by his beloved family, Ann (Dahill) Griggs; his daughter, Annemarie Griggs of Beverly Hills, CA; two sons, Donald Griggs, Jr. and Christopher Griggs, both of Kensington; and several cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen Karlonas.
