Joseph Stephen Hinchliffe, Sr., 87, of Kensington, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, (April 11, 2012). For 59 years, he was the beloved husband of Emily G. (Black) Hinchliffe. Born in New Britain on December 1, 1924, he was the son of the late Thomas W. and Mary Theresa (Kehoe) Hinchliffe. He and Emily met while he was attending Boston University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration after his service during World War II. He retired from his position as a Contracts Manager at Raymond Engineering, Inc. in January 1989. He was a Privileged Member of the Berlin Lions, a member of the Timberlin Senior Men's Golf League and a past member of the Duck Island Yacht Club. He also served on the Town of Berlin Planning and Zoning Commission for several years. Joe served in the U. S. Army Air Force as a Navigator in the China/Burma/India Operation. Joe shared his love of the ocean, sailing, golf, and gardening with his children and grandchildren. In retirement he crafted many latch hook rugs as gifts and to decorate their home. He will be remembered as a punctual, polite, and caring gentleman. In addition to his wife Emily, he is survived by their son Joseph Stephen, Jr. and his wife Sharon, of Kensington; their daughters Sharon and her husband James Klotz, of West Chester, PA; Darlene and her husband Roy Gurnon, of Tolland; and Jo-Ellen and her husband Gabriel James Vendetti, of Rocky Hill. He leaves eight grandchildren Carla (Hinchliffe) Berg, Leah Hinchliffe, Michelle (Klotz) Miller, Lindsey Klotz, Amanda and Karen Gurnon, Chelsea and Michael Vendetti; and two great-grandchildren Joshua and Andrea Berg. He is also survived by his brother Robert, of Wellesley, MA and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Thomas and sisters Rita-Mae McCusker, and Dorothy Lipton. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Friends and family are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Paul's Church Kensington. Burial will follow in South Burying Ground Cemetery, Kensington. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. at the Farrell Funeral Home 110 Franklin Square New Britain. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
