Patricia (Gaffney) Bowers, of Newington, died Saturday (July 5, 2014) at home. Born in New Britain, the daughter of the late Leo V. and Ruth (Boylan) Gaffney, she graduated from the Mary A. Burnham School in No. Hampton, MA in 1949 and graduated from Trinity College in Washington, DC, four years later.
Pat married Warren G. Hewes in 1953 and is survived by four children Warren G. Hewes, Leo G. Hewes, Roxanne Footer and Judy Black; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, all residing in Maine. She is also survived by her sister, Judy Gaffney of Newington, her brother-in-law Ralph Hedenberg, her nieces Ruthann Fainer and Lynda Thornton, and a nephew Colonel Ralph Hedenberg.
In 1972, Pat joined the investment firm of Advest, Inc. in Hartford, where she worked for thirty years.
In her early years with Advest she studied at the STC in New York to become registered as a stock broker and subsequently as a branch office manager. She ended her career in 2002 as the manager of the Farmington office of Advest.
She retired in 2002 and has since done volunteer work at the New Britain Museum of Art. Enjoying the beach with her husband at Dunes Park in Weekapaug, RI, she became president of that organization. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard R. Bowers, in 1988, and her sister, Brenda Hedenberg in 2009.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday 9:00 AM from the Farrell Funeral Home 110 Franklin Sq. New Britain, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Church 655 East St. New Britain. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the George Bray Cancer Center c/o Hospital of Central Connecticut 100 Grand St. New Britain, CT.
