Gabriel A. Gilbert, 84, of New Britain, passed away peacefully Monday (May 5, 2014) with his family by his side. Born and raised in St. Ludger, Canada. He was the son of the late Napoleon and Regina (Bolduc). While residing in Canada he held multiple occupations which included farmer, taxi driver, lumber jack, gold miner, and owner of a small specialty grocery store. After marrying Rose Helene Fortin in 1955, they began a new life together by moving to the United States. They lived in Bristol and relocated to New Britain, CT. While living in the United States, he was employed as a machinist at Cardinal Machine in West Hartford for 25 years and eventually retired from ITT Selectro in New Britain, CT. His passions in life were spending time with his family and loved ones, He also enjoyed attending local fairs, observing wildlife and nature, and watching UConn Huskies basketball teams or hockey games. Mr. Gilbert is survived by his wife Rose Helene Gilbert, two sons Jacques and his wife Rebecca, Steve and wife Mary-Jo, a daughter Lucie Heleniak; seven grandchildren Jessica, Sarah, Brigitte, Alexis, Zachary, Kayla, and Madison. A brother Andre Gilbert of Plainville, CT. A sister Therese and husband Robert Dionne of Nashua, NH. Sisters and Brothers in-laws; Claire Fortin and Noella Fortin of St. Sauveur, Canada, Julien and Gervaise Fortin of St. Cesaire, Canada, Marc and Nicole Fortin of Vanier Quebec Canada, Ghislaine Fortin Rhodes, Michigan, Ralph Slainbrook of Rhodes, Michigan, Louis and Louise Fortin of Victoriaville Quebec, Simon and Gail Fortin L'Amable Ontario. Gilbert also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers Jean-Paul and Gerard. Funeral services will be held Thursday May 8th, at 9 AM at the Farrell Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM St. Peter's Church 98 Franklin Square. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 PM at the Farrell Funeral Home 110 Franklin Sq. New Britain. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Peter's Church 98 Franklin Sq. New Britain, CT 06051 or to American Cancer Society 1075 Chase Pkwy Waterbury, CT 06708.
