My name is John DeForest Jr. I am a Executive board member of the Connecticut Fire Photographers Association. I have known Joe for 3 years now and it has been an absolute honor. From the 1st day I met Joe to the last day I saw Joe on Nov 11th 2020 he always an outgoing personality with me and I wont ever forget that. Joe would always ask how I was and then ask how the most recent fire I buffed was and some details. He would also ask the new news of different fire departments in my area. I always said Joe wanted to know the scoop on things. I am saddened of his passing but I am honored the experience of photography Joe has left with me. Joe was one of the best of the best in my eyes and I wont ever forget you my friend. Till we meet again, we have it from here now, rest easy
RIP Joe

I was truly saddened when I received news of Joe’s passing.
Joe spent many years riding with us on the Tac Unit in the 80’s and 90’s. Joe was part of the crew. He was our “imbedded” fire photographer chronicling the lives of HFD firefighters through his photos. Ask any of us that spent time with Joe during those days and we’d all say the same thing: what a great guy!
My heartfelt condolences to the Marino family.
RIP brother.

I first met Joe when I took a first aid course in 1971 sponsored by the New Britain CD Rescue Squad. Joe was the Assistant Chief. I joined the squad and was promoted to Deputy Chief, working alongside Joe for several years. We both left the squad. He went to Kensington to work with the KFD ambulance and I went to Newington where I became Chief of the NVA. We continued to work together through our programs for many years. I always valued his expertise and friendship.
My fondest memory is from one one the many times I went fishing with him. We went deep sea fishing and I got quite seasick. I was starting to feel a little better by lunch time. Joe though I would feel better if I ate some lunch. He brought lunch, salami sandwiches!
Rescue/Fire/EMS all benefited from the dedication of guys like Joe. He will be missed.

I knew Joe from when I volunteered at the Hosp. for Special Care in the Gift Shop. I knew Joe to be a quite, unassuming man and always willing to help. Funny, I once bumped into him at the Sarasota, NY Race Track. My condolences to his family. Jill Price

Hi I am Amira Radcliffe, a pediatric nurse 3-11 at hsc. I’ve known Joe for many, many years and had many funny moments with him when he would do his rounds and come
Up to pedi. He loved the children and played with them often. And the kids loved him right back. He was the one I would call when I needed help with some security issues on the unit and he would be right there eager to help. Everytime I would see him and ask for some chips to give to me and the staff, he would always come back with a bag full of chips for us to help us get through our stressful shift. And it always brought us so much happiness when he did that. He had a nickname for me and it was “Mona Lisa” because he always use to say I whined and moaned a lot and he would always say to me “stop whining”. I am so very sorry for this tragic loss and I pray for your family to get through this hard time. When I first heard about his passing, I was at work and I couldn’t stop thinking about him all night. I’m very sad about this and I just wanted to share some of my fond memories of one of our favorite security guards I know.
