San J. Liem, M.D., 78, of New Britain, died Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at the Hospice Unit of the Hospital of Central CT in New Britain, after a long and courageous battle with pulmonary disease. Dr. Liem was born in Indonesia. He left Indonesia in 1970 to complete an internship in New Foundland, Canada. From there he came to the United States to complete his residency in New York and Waterbury. He was a Pulmonary Fellow at Hartford Hospital in 1978. He worked for New Britain General Hospital for three years as an emergency physician. He continued on his medical career in New York and Connecticut. Prior to his retirement in 1990 he worked at the Groton Naval base in Groton, CT. He enjoyed dancing, walking, reading, and instructing internet classes at the New Britain Senior Center. He was dedicated to everything that he set out to do. In his retirement years, he enjoyed visiting his three sisters- one in the Netherlands, the others in Indonesia. He enjoyed his high school reunions and medical reunions.
Dr. Liem is survived by his wife Rita (Houde) Liem, three sisters Sian, Ina and Sissi. He leaves his nephews, nieces, and cousins, all in Indonesia. Also, his niece, Claire Hadzega of Texas, and his nephew, George M'Sadoques of Massachusetts. He was predeceased by two brothers.
Funeral services will be held Friday Morning at 10:30 A.M. at the Farrell Funeral Home 110 Franklin Square New Britain. Burial will be private in St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. Visitation will be Friday Morning from 9:30 A.M. until 10:30 A.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
