Obituary of George Nowak
Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George Nowak, celebrated local artist and teacher, died Monday at age 59 from complications related to Multiple Sclerosis. George is survived by his daughters Erin and Sara and his best buddy Louie. He also leaves his former wife Linda Carney and sister-in-law Jane Carney who was a great support in his life.
For over twenty years he used his passion for art to cope with the daily struggle of the progressive and mysterious illness. George taught countless students from young adults to senior citizens, ensuring that they had strong portfolios for art school, or at least an enriching routine. Anyone who spent time with George, knows that he taught people much more than how to draw or paint. Despite his suffering, he offered everyone a listening ear, consoling advice or jokes and an ever present bowl of candy. George even lead the local Multiple Sclerosis support group.
For many years, George's award-winning pen and ink illustrations brought a unique, human touch to the pages of The New Britain Herald and The Hartford Courant before computer created graphics took over. He also illustrated for Channel Three and even Coleco Toys, famous for their Cabbage Patch Dolls.
More recently he was a favorite personality on Nutmeg TV in his series Art with George. Throughout his career George garnered awards too numerous to list, including several from United Press International.
Born and raised in New Britain, George attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School, and received his Bachelors of Fine Art from the University of Hartford Art School in 1976. George was predeceased by his father, Andrew Nowak. He is survived by his mother Hedy (née Bysarowicz) Nowak of New Britain, and his brother Andrew Nowak of North Carolina. George also leaves behind the caring staff of Apple Healthcare in Cromwell. We know George will be looking out for Amanda and her child.
To honor George's wishes, services will be private. Come and have a cup of coffee at the New Britain Diner, on 1130 Corbin Avenue, to celebrate George on Friday 10/11 from 9-11 am.
Memorial contributions can be made in memory of George Nowak, to the Multiple Sclerosis Society 659 Tower Avenue, 1st Floor, Hartford, CT 06112, or online at nationalmssociety.org.
