Hilda Sampt Obituary

Hilda Sampt, 95, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 2, 2026, surrounded by the family and friends who were the center of her world.

Born on February 27, 1931, in Leitersdorf, Austria, Hilda was the youngest of eight children born to Anton and Apollonia Gombotz. In 1956, she and her sister Rosa embarked on a life-changing journey, immigrating to the United States to build a new future. Though she embraced her life in America, she carried the strength and traditions of her Austrian roots with her always.

Hilda dedicated many years of service to the State of Connecticut as a caregiver and cook in a group home. Her work was more than a job; it was a reflection of her natural instinct to provide comfort and nourishment to others. Upon her retirement in 2003, she transitioned into her favorite role: grandmother. Her grandchildren were her greatest pride, and she found her deepest joy in the time spent watching them grow.

A true animal lover, Hilda was rarely without a feline companion. She firmly believed that "pets make a house into a home," and she ensured her own was always filled with warmth and the quiet company of her beloved cats.

Hilda is now reunited with her parents, her seven siblings, her husband, and the many cherished pets who went before her.

Her memory will be kept alive by her children, Edward Sampt of West Hartford, CT, and Jennifer Miller of Parker, CO; and her grandchildren, Sarah Sampt, Matthew Sampt, Jason Miller, and Alex Miller. She also leaves behind her beloved caregiver, Alicia Sergeant; her "bonus grandson," Jontae Dwyer; and her dear friends, Rachel Trudell and Regina Mlynarska, all of whom became an integral part of her family circle.

Friends and family are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday (March 7th) at 10:30am directly at St. Jerome Church, 1010 Slater Road, New Britain. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, 1141 Stanley St. New Britain.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Hilda’s memory to the Connecticut Humane Society 701 Russell Road, Newington CT 06111, an organization dear to her heart.
