Irene Marie Spring (Herzy) died February 28, 2026. She was the beloved wife of the late William J. Spring, Jr., for 56 years. Irene was the attendance officer at Southington High School and worked at the preschool at St. Dominic’s Church. She was born in New Britain, Connecticut on August 11, 1945, the daughter of the late Charles and Emma Herzy.
Irene enjoyed life with memories that included raising three daughters and enjoying camping as members of the Happy Wanderers and belonging to the community of St. Thomas Church where she volunteered in RCIA and knitted lap robes for cancer patients. Irene also enjoyed doing ceramics, reading, knitting blankets and crocheting. Irene was especially fond of birds and bird watching, cats, and animals of all kinds, having adopted and loved numerous pets in her lifetime. She was an avid baker of her special “Nana Cookies”, pies and breads, always the first to bring them to all the family celebrations. She enjoyed watching UCONN basketball and enjoyed visiting with her family and neighbors. Irene was her children and grandchildren’s biggest cheer leader and could always be found at their concerts, sports events and graduations and any reason to celebrate them.
She is survived by three beloved daughters, Laura-Jean Minton (Steve), Lisa Ann Unwin (Brian), Julie Lynn Spring (Debbie Colucci); four grandchildren: Eric Minton, Daniel Minton (Kassie), Olivia Unwin (Vinny), and Blair Unwin; nephew Chris Kasey (Enny Lee) and great granddaughter, Madeline Maeve Kamradt Minton. In addition to her very special husband, she is predeceased by her brother, Charles (Chuck) Herzy. She will be dearly missed.
The family sends a heartfelt thank you to the nursing team at Apple Rehab and Accent Hospice Care for their empathetic care and support of Irene and her family during this time.
