Mary A. "Toni" Durkee Obituary

Our beloved mother, Mary Antonia “Toni” (Hayden) Durkee, 91, of Berlin, CT passed away on January 21st, 2026 after a sudden illness, surrounded by her loving family.

After marrying John “Jack” Durkee, she had three sons; Stephen, Daniel, and Peter. She worked at Newington Children’s Hospital for many years in human resources.

Toni’s siblings, children & their families, and friends were the joy of her life. She was always quick to help out when needed.

Her garden was her refuge, where she delighted in working with her plants and feeding the birds. She was a longtime member of the Berlin Garden Club.  Golf, tennis, bridge, and travel kept her social life busy. Martha’s Vineyard held a special place in her heart for over 60 years.  She loved unwinding there on State Beach, walking the campground, getting too many ice creams on Circuit Avenue, and taking hikes in conservation land.

She was preceded in death by her siblings; Richard Hayden, Nancy Drooff and William Hayden. She is survived by her children; Stephen Durkee (Elizabeth Durkee), Daniel Durkee (Lisa Durkee) and Peter Durkee (Janine Gutowski); and her cherished grandchildren; Andrew Durkee, Tyler Durkee, Kevin Durkee (Kristine Maravel), Stephanie Durkee, Molly Schade, Dylan Schade and Eric Juers.

A funeral mass will be held St. Paul’s Church, 485 Alling Street, Kensington, CT on Thursday, January 29th, 2026, at 10am, followed by her interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in New Britain.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital (PO Box 1477, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557) or East Chop Assoc. (PO box 1916, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557).
