Leontina S. Lucas Obituary

Leontina (Schmalz) Lucas, 81, of New Britain, CT died peacefully on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 after a brief stay at the UConn Medical Center. She was the daughter of John and Katherine (Kopp) Schmalz. Tina was born in the Ukrainian SSR, now Ukraine, and came to the United States as a young child. She resided in New Britain, CT until the time of her death. She graduated from New Britain High School and went on to Bryant College, now University, to study secretarial sciences. She worked at Stanley Works briefly and then Central Connecticut State University for over 30 years as an Administrative Assistant.


A proud supporter of CCSU, Tina attended sporting and cultural events offered by the University. During her time at CCSU, Tina supported the efforts of the Women’s Center and earned a Women In Leadership Award from the YWCA.


Tina retired in 2003 when her first grandchild was born and lovingly helped care for her three grandchildren. She fully enjoyed being a grandmother and supporting their interests, often attending games, concerts, dance performances and school events. 


She is survived by her mother, Katherine Schmalz of New Britain, a daughter and her husband, Katherine Lucas and Jim Glaspey, as well as three grandchildren, Jack, Leah, and Sarah Glaspey of Farmington. She is predeceased by her husband, Edward, and children Andrew, Edward Jr., and Kimberly. 


A private Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Jerome Church, New Britain. Burial followed at St. Mary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to New Britain Public Library, 20 High St. New Britain CT 06051.
