Obituary of Howard J. Asal Jr.
It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Howard J. Asal, Jr., who died at home in Berlin at 87. He was predeceased by his wife and lifetime love of 57 years, Margaret “Peggy” M. (Melley) Asal. He was born in New Britain to the late Mary (Calvo) and Howard Asal, Sr. Howard leaves behind his children Howard, Kenneth, and Cynthia, and their families.
After he earned his business degree from UConn, Howie was the president of Asal Construction for most of his adult life. He was a voracious reader who daily read several newspapers front to back. Some of his happiest times were spent taking cruises with his wife and being there for his family. In later years he enjoyed going to museums, spending time with his friends and continuing to show up for the people in his life. He was a really nice guy and it took very little to make him happy.
There will be no calling hours and the burial will be private. In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests donations be made to the Citizens Against Physical and Sexual Abuse Fund.
The family wants to offer special thanks to his granddaughters, Talia and his Lefty-buddy Leila, who largely cared for him these past few years. We also offer thanks to the thoughtful, caring nurses and aides of the Hartford Health CareHospice Program, who all confided that he was their favorite, and to his brother Bobby and wife Marilyn, for the many meals and visits.
