Obituary of Loretta M. Spigno
Loretta Spigno, 68, of Middletown, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at Middlesex Hospital after being diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends while receiving hospice care.
Loretta was born in the Bronx, New York on July 30, 1956, to Basil and Anna Francescucci Spigno. When she was 7 years old, she moved to New Britain, Connecticut. She was crowned Miss Sons of Italy, representing her Italian heritage and graduated from New Britain High School in 1974.
Loretta's formal education started in 1974 at New Britain General Hospital Surgical Technologist School, where she was first hired as a surgical technologist. She then worked alongside an ENT surgeon in New Britain before taking on a position at Saint Raphael’s Hospital in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery. In 1985, Loretta obtained her associate’s degree in nursing from Quinnipiac College. She then worked as a devoted RN in the SICU at Saint Raphael’s Hospital. In 1989, Loretta graduated from the Saint Raphael’s School of Nurse Anesthesia, now Yale School of Nurse Anesthesia. Post grad, she was employed by Anesthesia Associates of New Haven, PC. She was a staff CRNA promoted to manager and Chief Anesthetist for the department. Loretta was later employed by Saint Francis Hospital. She continued her love for patient care as a provider for medical marijuana. Her career in various nursing positions has spanned over 45 years. It has been a lifetime of caring and generosity that made her stand out to her peers.
Loretta was the mother and friend anyone would have been lucky to have. Her compassion and selflessness shaped her unique character. She never forgot a birthday, anniversary, or significant milestone. You always felt that your emotions were acknowledged, even if she was just listening. She always talked about how much she wanted to be a mom. The love and dedication to her daughter was immeasurable. She described Rachel to be the greatest gift in her life. Loretta enjoyed reading and watching shows on TLC. She often reminisced about the vacations she took to Aruba, Maine, and Hawaii during her younger years.
Loretta is predeceased by her beloved brother, Louis J Spigno, who passed away in 1978, her father and mother, Basil and Anna Spigno.
She is survived by her daughters, Rachel Spigno and her boyfriend, Eric Almeida, Ze Namu and her boyfriend, Jasper Panzera, her younger brother John Spigno, and cherished friends and family. Loretta leaves behind those who advocated for her health the most in the end; Maria Lopez, and her childhood friends, Maria Michaud and her husband Donald of Prospect, Connecticut, Lori Salinger and her husband Steven of Hebron, Connecticut.
Although it is painful to say goodbye, Loretta’s spirit will guide us through our hardships. As the true definition of selfless, she always gave to others before considering her own needs. Friends, family, and coworkers alike will have fond memories of the wonderful past times and generosity that Loretta brought to enrich her relationships. We will miss her dearly.
Loretta’s favorite color was red, and she was not a fan of all black at funerals! If you would like, feel free to wear red to the funeral.
