Marie Sandelli, age 90, passed away after a long illness in New Canaan, CT, on Saturday, March 30, 2013. She was born on March 29, 1923 in New Britain, CT to Anthony and Catherine Allegretti. She grew up in New Britain and graduated from New Britain High School in 1941 where she was active in civics, theater and business classes. After graduation, she worked for Landers, Frary and Clark as a bookkeeper. In her later years, she attended Central Connecticut State College for advanced Italian studies. Engaged during the war years, Marie married Albert "Duke" Sandelli in 1946. She worked by his side and with his family at Sandelli Greenhouses on Oak Street for almost 40 years until his passing in 1983. After the death of her beloved husband, she divided her time between her home in Florida and those of her daughters.
Marie was also predeceased by her dear brother, Dante Allegretti in 2004.
During her lifetime she enjoyed traveling with her friends and family, Italian operas, reading, and any creative endeavors that would bring beauty to her life and those around her. She appreciated lively discussions and had a spirited sense of humor.
A good friend, a devoted wife and mother, and an adoring grandmother, she had a deep and enduring sense of kindness and generosity which inspired and guided her care and concern for others. Marie lived a life of remarkable courage, integrity and faith.
She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Catherine and Richard Girgenti of New York and Allegra and Gerard Gerlach of New Jersey: her three grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher and Rachel; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be at the Farrell Funeral Home 110 Franklin Square, New Britain, CT on Friday (April 5, 2013) from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.
A full memorial service will be held at the funeral home Saturday (April 6, 2013) at 11:00 AM . Family and friends are welcome. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
